When you think of a pet, you imagine a dog, a cat, or even a fish in a bowl. But when you think of a pig, all sorts of things flood your mind, like a pig playing in his own poop in some farm, or the bacon you had for breakfast this morning. But you’d never consider a pig as a household pet. Just imagine all the trouble it can get into and the things it could wind up breaking. Also, if you have dogs at home, you assume that they wouldn’t get along with a living breathing piece of bacon. But you’re way off! Just one large pig named Chowder, who isn’t just BFFs with 5 dogs; he’s part of their pack too.
This is Chowder, and as you might imagine, he was not meant to lead a long life in this world.
A woman named Shelby Madere has been fighting for animal rights, particularly against an Aurora Cooperative Factory in Brazil, so that they stop mutilating and confining pigs, like Chowder, whom she rescued.
Chowder may be the only pig in Shelby’s home, but he’s got plenty of friends to keep him company.
The pig has a family that consists of five dogs that range in breed and sizes from a small Pomeranian mix to a larger dog, which happens to be the German Shepherd, and they all get along just fine in this mixed family.
People in general assume that dogs and cats are the only ones capable of giving us love.
If Chowder has proven anything it’s that pigs, like other animals, are capable of spreading a lot of love, especially when you rescue them from a life of torture, like Shelby did. Now, Chowder is part of a doggy pack, and they’re inseparable.
After being rescued, the pig was raised among the ranks of five dogs, hence why they’re so close.
His canine siblings love to cuddle, take a walk, and just hang around the living room or the patio in the backyard. Obviously, this diverse family loves each other very much and is happy to look after one another.
Oddly enough, both the pig and his doggy sibling appear to have two lovely smiles on their faces.
Maybe it’s the fact that Shelby’s patio is so nice and neat, or maybe they love the way the warm floor feels on their paws and hooves. Or, maybe they just wanted to work on their tan. But the little pooch wouldn’t dare bring up the smell of bacon in front of Chowder.
Shelby uses social media to spread the love and her cause to help animals like Chowder.
Aside from sharing how awesome Chowder and his pooch siblings get along on Instagram, Shelby has shared a petition on Change.org to get Grupo Pao de Acucar in Brazil from buying Aurora products, the factory that mutilates and tortures baby pigs.
Sure, they’re looking all nice and innocent in this photo, but one of them is up to something.
These pooches are probably trying to keep their human, Shelby distracted by looking all adorbs, while Chowder is getting ready to have a blast rolling around in the dirt, and probably wrecking Shelby’s garden in the process.
When it comes to spending quality time, Chowder has no favorites among his adopted family of dogs.
He’ll hang out with all of his adoptive siblings from the big pooches to the small ones. In fact, sometimes, one of the dogs will notice Chowder doing something and will walk next to him and try and do the same, like investigate what that thing is on the ground.
Shelby claims that pigs are “incredibly intelligent and social animals” who shouldn’t be confined.
Had Chowder remained in in the Aurora farm in Brazil, he would have undoubtedly remained confined, which would have led to “repeatedly bite the bars” of his cage, “a sign of serious mental collapse.” Fortunately, she spared him from that horror.
When Shelby had first adopted Chowder, he was nothing more than a little piglet, who would grow.
In most cases, people buy piglets because they assume they’ll stay small and cute forever, but as soon as they grow, they’re ill-prepared to handle a fully-grown pig running around the house. But Shelby will never turn her back on Chowder and neither will his doggy siblings.
Growing up with a family full of dogs is a whole lot better than growing up in a cage at a farm.
Here, Chowder gets to experience the true love that every creature on the planet deserves to have. According to Shelby, Chowder and his siblings spend a whole lot of time just being silly and doing nutty things.
Shelby is definitely a huge supporter of animal rights and would march in the pig pride parade!
She’s not alone when it comes to loving pigs. There are others like Cara Anderson, who have opened up a GoFundMe campaign to prevent her pig, Hamela from being taken away by HOA, who has given her an ultimatum that involves fines if the pig isn’t kicked out. Hopefully, Shelby can avoid dealing with this.
When you hang out with dogs all the time, you’re bound to pick up a few things, like where to sleep.
Chowder figured out early on that doggie beds are oh-so comfortable, hence why he decided to take a nap in one of his sibling’s bed. Of course, we’re sure there’s going to be a huge fight if the dog that this bed belongs to gets sleepy. Ain’t family wonderful?
Until now, many of us assumed that pigs in a blanket were delicious hot dogs in a Pillsbury dough.
Chowder took things to a new level by literally becoming a pig in a blanket, and it may not be delicious, but it sure is adorable, which is why we totally get the reason for Shelby’s desire to stop farms from abusing animals like Chowder.
It’s safe to say that these dogs and Chowder are living a happy life in Shelby’s home, indoor and out.
It’s Shelby’s hope that her posts on social media will inspire other people to let go of the idea of conventional pets, and start adopting other animals like pigs, who need as much love as anybody else does.
Love is definitely a powerful force that can transcend just about anything, and that includes species.
While Chowder and the pooches aren’t related by blood, they’ve proven that a little love is always welcomed. Just look at these two touching noses. It’s so darn adorable. Doesn’t it just melt your heart?
